“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”—Matthew 10:29-30, NIV
In this scripture, Jesus was coaching his disciples before He sent them out to spread the good news Kingdom of God. He was equipping them for the dangers ahead and the persecution they might face.
It’s interesting that Jesus uses God’s care for the sparrow to communicate His deep love and care for his disciples. Sparrows in those days were considered useless! They were the most insignificant bird on the market. They were so common merchants would sell two sparrows for one penny, and five sparrows for two pennies—essentially offering the fifth sparrow for free.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God . . . Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”—Luke 12:6-7, NIV
Jesus is conveying a powerful message here friend! That what man deemed so insignificant as to throw in an extra few sparrows for free, “Here, take a few more!” God deems so valuable that He—God almighty—would notice if even one of them were to fall to the wayside. God has His eye on the sparrow…and He has His eye on you! You matter to God.
“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me.” —Psalm 139:17-18, NLT
FRIEND, I’ve heard it said many times, “God has more important things to deal with than my little issue”. So many of us are willing to accept the ailments in our life because we think that God has more important things to worry about. Well friend, I want to remind you of this—God doesn’t worry about anything. He is in full control. And His word tells us plainly that His thoughts are on us. They can’t even be numbered! His thoughts for you outnumber the grains of sand! You need a reminder today that God cares so deeply for you. Whether you are hurting or in need of healing—He notices. If your soul needs rest—He notices! He sees you, He cares about you, your very hairs are numbered. You are His beloved son/daughter.
TODAY: Cling to this truth and simply agree. Repeat after me: “God cares for me. He sees me. God will deliver me. He will protect me and He will meet all of my needs according to His riches and glory. I matter to God.” Allow God’s tender loving care for you to refresh and water your soul.
