“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” —MATTHEW 10:29–30 NIV
When Jesus raises a point we need to take note! Here, we have the Son of God opening up the depths of Gods deep love and care for His disciples before they go out to preach the Kingdom by revealing God’s care for even a sparrow.
Have you ever considered the value of a sparrow and why this story is an appropriate word of encouragement for the disciples before they head out to preach this new, controversial message?
In Jesus’ day sparrows were considered to be the most common, insignificant bird on the market. They were so common merchants would sell two sparrows for one cent, and five sparrows for two cents—essentially offering the fifth sparrow for free. The penny in this scripture was a Roman asarion, which was worth a measly1/16 of a silver denarius. Jesus gives a similar message in Luke,
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” —LUKE 12:6-7 NIV
Jesus is conveying a powerful message here!
That what man deems insignificant, God calls valuable!
Man didn’t recognize the value of the sparrow; but God values all of His creation… enough so that He is aware if even one “measly” sparrow falls to the ground.
God’s eye is on the sparrow…and He His eye is on you friend!
Do you ever wonder if God really sees you?
How could God notice me among the sea of people on earth?
Yet this scripture states it perfectly! God doesn’t measure value the way man does. Mans’ value system determined that more sparrows equaled less value per bird. God says, “Not only do I see each and every one of those sparrows I care for them enough to notice if even one were to fall by the wayside. So how much more do I treasure you that I would care to know the number of hairs on your head!”

God cares for you friend. He sees you! You have value. Even if man has made you feel otherwise—God determines your worth as His beloved. His precious son/daughter. His value goes deeper than we can even fathom. He cares to know even the most seemingly insignificant detail about our lives! This can only mean one thing—there is nothing about our lives that is insignificant to God. Boy, that sure sounds like a Father to me friend…a good Father.
So be encouraged today. That when you feel as though nobody notices you—God does! When you feel as though no one cares for you—God cares! He intricately knit you together in your mother’s womb for a purpose friend (Ps. 139:13). Seek Him for your value. Seek Him for your identity. Cling to what God says about you today friend. I pray you are give fresh, Jesus eyes to see yourself as God does today. . . as a priceless treasure. As a child of royalty. As a son. A daughter.
